Today it is the major Government service centre in the Gulf Savannah with regular flights and a range of accommodation and activities. The Normanton Railway Station is a classic example of Victorian architecture and a highlight among a range of preserved historic sites to visit in Normanton. The historic Burns Philp building which houses the Visitor Information Centre and Library should be your first stop to get all the info on what to see and do in Normanton. Pick up a self- guided tour map. Be sure to get your photo with Krys the Croc beside the Carpentaria Shire Council building. Krys is a staggering 8.63 metres long! Fishing from the fishing bridge and wharf is a must while you are here. Explore the surrounds of Normanton including Burke and Wills last marked campsite ‘Camp 119’. Muttonhole is a stunning wetlands that come alive from November to April as the monsoon rain replenishes dry waterways and lakes that attract all varieties of birdlife such as brolgas, pelicans and jabirus. In the dry season the wetland retreat leaving a beautiful landscape of mangroves and grassland. Cameras are must in this area.
