This is a popular spot to camp or stay in some of the Savannah Way’s most pleasant accommodation. Driving in from Normanton you’ll pass through the Mutton Hole Wetlands, an internationally listed wetland habitat for birds. Extending inland for 30 kilometres, these meandering saltwater tidal estuaries are the habitat of saltwater crocodiles and many bird species including pelicans, brolgas and black swans. Karumba is the only beach in the Gulf Savannah serviced by a sealed road so access is year round except for occasional flooding events during the wet season. Fishing is the most popular activity, with tours and excellent facilities for your own boat. Local shops sell all necessary gear and have plenty of tips for visitors. The Karumba region is also interesting to explore, with many interpretive signs on streets and along walking paths, beach side 4WD tracks and cafes, shops and attractions to visit. Ask at the Visitor Information Centre for local tips. Visit the iconic Les Wilson Barramundi Discovery Centre and discover the amazing secrets of the mighty Barramundi, the only hatchery in the world to breed the Southern Gulf strain of this iconic fish! Take a tour of the hatchery, and say G’Day to Flossie, the over 1m long female Barramundi! Enjoy the excitement of the feeding spectacle!
