Spend a night here for some living territory heritage. Daly Waters Over the years this outpost has been a vital water stop for explorer John McDouall Stuart, Overland Telegraph Line workers and outback drovers, early refuelling stop for Qantas Singapore flights and World War II airforce base. There is an air conditioned shopping centre, hospital, sports grounds, parks and gardens, plus full mechanical facilities and government agencies servicing scattered communities. The Katherine Visitor Information Centre offers customised travel itineraries, tour and accommodation bookings and all the information there is on what to see and do in and around the Northern Territory region. The Katherine Museum was the air terminal during World War II, and now contains eclectic artefacts, photographs, maps and pioneer memorabilia in informative displays. Chat to the friendly volunteers and visit the tea room. O’Keeffe House also give valuable insight into Katherine’s past. Visit several authentic Aboriginal art galleries or make your own masterpiece at Top Didj Cultural Experience. Visit the School of the Air for a vital side of life today. Katherine River flows through town. Low Level Nature Reserve and Knotts Crossing are beautiful places, however not recommended for swimming. There is swimming in our crystal clear Katherine Hot Springs. Nitmiluk (Katherine Gorge) National Park is the jewel of the region, a magnificent series of 13 gorges carved by the Katherine River. It is the home of the Jawoyn people who are deeply involved in the park today. The Park is 29km from Katherine on a fully sealed road and offers a variety of spectacular boat cruises; half day, full day or overnight canoeing, scenic flights and over 100km of bushwalking trails with something to suit all visitors. The Jatbula Trail is an iconic five day walk, covering 58km of bushland, that can be undertaken independently or on tour.
